Necessary infrastructure work close to completion at Stoney.

As part of the renovation of the camp, we are overjoyed that major infrastructure work is nearing completion.  In late January, a walk through was conducted of the site and it was determined that major systems were either failing or in need of replacement.

In order to keep the Camp operational, functional and to meet the code requirements, these system upgrades and replacements were required.   Thus, the Trustees of the Diocese appropriated $250,000 in order to repair and replace infrastructure systems.

The new systems included:
  • plumbing in lodge, bathrooms, cabins, main house and grounds (pipes, water heaters, sinks and drainage)
  • electrical (in cabins, lodge, grounds, main box and various buildings)
  • gas/propane system for lodge and cabins
  • entire remodel of bathrooms.

Initial estimates for the work were three times higher than the amount appropriated by the Trustees.  The project team worked diligently using value added construction methods and by the use of dedicated professionals.  Bishop Vono is pleased to report that the work was completed with the initial amount appropriated.

Moreover, with the cost savings, the Diocese reinvested the savings into the Camp.  The Construction Team was able to remodel the exterior of the Lodge, the Exterior and Interior of the Guest Lodge, fully renovate  cottage and construct an outdoor youth worship space.

The Diocese is committed to preserving and enhancing this important place of retreat, spirituality and fun for the Rio Grande. Please join the Diocese on June 9th from 2-5 as we celebrate the new Bishop's Ridge.

Fr. Brian Taylor's Retirement Party

SAYING GOODBYES ARE NEVER EASY! by Judith Jenkins

It may not be the talk of the whole town, but it certainly is the talk at St. Michael’s------that is, all the comments about the wonderful party for Brian Taylor on Friday, May 17th.  Over 300 people gathered for a very festive occasion; and along with all the cheers, the praise, and tears of course, members and friends celebrated the exceptional  30 year ministry of Brian at St. Michael and All Angels. Good food, remarkable presentations, along with memorable gifts, all marked one of the many ways that members of the congregation prepared for the final goodbyes to their beloved rector.

robably one of the best descriptions to be given of Brian’s ministry came from Bonnie Anderson, former president of the House of Deputies:
“Wisdom, intellect, compassion and faith are elusive for most of us.  It is rare for one person to have and to hold these qualities together all at once.  Lucky for all of us and for the whole Episcopal Church, Brian has somehow mastered the ability to keep all four of these in balance.  In fact, not only has he mastered this art, he has shared it with us.  Brian is the ringmaster of our circus, the conductor of our symphony.  And over the years of knowing him, we moved out of our seats in the audience of the church to join him in the center of true discipleship….He’s a diverse guy:  he writes books, has excellent carpentry skills, plays the guitar and sings, is a husband, father, friend  and advocate for the oppressed and marginalized.”  Thank you Brian…we have become more whole because of you.”

Saying goodbye wasn’t easy, but as Susanna said in her closing remarks about her husband’s ministry: “thank you for letting him go.”  So with reluctance and many prayers for his new adventures, we said ADIOS!
